CATS: Is it as bad as they say?

Updated: Aug 20, 2020

The answer to the titular question is simple: no. Once I got over the nightmarish CGI, I found the movie honestly enjoyable. Vocal and physical talent are combined to make a fun piece of strange escapism led by actress and incredible dancer Francesca Hayward. The musical numbers failed to be immersive as they are when experiencing the show live on stage, a struggle all movie musicals must deal with, but they were still filled with an electrifying sort of energy. To the surprise of no one, the performer who stole the show was Jennifer Hudson. However, that is not to say that the rest of the cast failed to deliver. For me, the only performance that seemed to be missing a certain something was that of Dame Judi Dench.

The greatest downfall of this film was the horrendous digital effects. There are very few modern films in which I find the CGI to be unimpressive, whether it failed to look real, or was just plain bad. In CATS, the visual effects looked both awful and unreal. It is my belief that the creative team should have swayed to the theatrical side of things when it came to deciding on looks and thus should have dressed and made-up the film cast to resemble the OBC rather than having them looking like nightmares brought to life.

Throughout the film, the CGI definitely remained unnerving, but I did manage to get used to it to a certain extent and only then was I able to see the real talent and promise contained within this film.
